When you picture the Son of God, the One who created you and all things in heaven and earth, nailed to a cross, it tells a story. What happened? Why is He there?
The word “gospel” means “good news.” Here are a few Bible verses that describe the good news about God’s provision for our salvation:
Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”
1 Cor. 15:1-5 “Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve.”
John 1:1-5; 9-13; 16-18 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
… 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.” 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
….16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.”
Col. 1:13-14 “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.”
Romans 5:9 “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.”
In his book, “The Bible Has the Answer,” Henry M. Morris summarizes God’s primal purpose in creation on page 240:
“The earth was created primarily for man
and man was created for personal fellowship with God.
The interruption of an age of sin and rebellion has temporarily delayed the accomplishment of this purpose.
Nevertheless, the incarnation of the Son of God in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ,
His substitutionary death on the cross for our sins,
and the triumphant resurrection for our justification
have altogether purchased the salvation and restoration of all who receive Him by faith as personal Lord and Savior.
Jesus Christ is thus not only the redeemer but also the great divider – between those who desire to be restored to God’s fellowship on the one hand, and those who prefer to remain separated from Him on the other hand (Jn. 3:18, 19, 36).”
Basically, the Gospel of Jesus Christ reveals to us of our need to be delivered from the captivity of Satan, of sin, the guilt it plaques us with, the bondage it enslaves us in, and the power it holds over us. Because it is God in whom we have sinned against, it is Him alone who can save us from our sinful condition, and He has done so, justifiably through atonement by the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ, who suffered the punishment of death in our place, yet was able to be resurrected to the right hand of His Father God because Jesus was God the Son, the sinless Lamb of God. He died so that we may live.
The gospel of Jesus Christ is about His life, death, and resurrection, so that in fulfillment of scriptures, He would set free the captives, whose names are written in the Lambs book of life (Rev. 21:27), from sin and death and most importantly, to restore their fellowship with their heavenly Father God, sanctifying them through the indwelling Holy Spirit and giving hope of His return and to live eternally in His kingdom where there is no evil. For those who desire to reject God’s free gift of grace, forgiveness and salvation, they will be judged, justice will be served for all evil ever committed, and they will justifiably be sent permanently to the lake of fire.
Jesus died in our place:
Romans 5:6-11 “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.”
Philippians 2:5-11 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
1 Peter 2:21-25 “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:
22 “Who committed no sin,
Nor was deceit found in His mouth”;23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”
Jesus came to set us free
Hebrews 2:14, 15 “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”
Luke 4:18, 19 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Jesus came to restore our fellowship with God:
Psalm 51:12 “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.”1 Corinthians 1:9 “God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Ephesians 3:16-19 “that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
1 John 1:3 “that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.”
John 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
We are sanctified through His atoning blood:
2 Thessalonians 2:13, 14 “But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Titus 3:4-7 “But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
We wait in hope of His return to restore all things:
Titus 2:13 “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,”
Acts 3:20, 21 “and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, 21 whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.
We wait for the day when He will serve justice to all the wicked ones who reject Him and persecuted His children on earth:
John 15:18, 19, 23 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. … 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also.”
Revelation 11:17, 18 “We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty,
The One who is and who was and who is to come,
Because You have taken Your great power and reigned.
18 The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come,
And the time of the dead, that they should be judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth.”Matthew 25:32, 33 “All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.”
Revelation 20:10, 15 “The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever… 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.”
Lewis Sperry Chafer quotes about the gospel of the grace of God:
“The Gospel of the grace of God. This is the good news that Jesus Christ, the rejected King, has died on the cross for the sins of the world, that He was raised from the dead for our justification, and that by Him all that believe are justified from all things. This form of the Gospel is described in many ways.
It is the Gospel “of God” (Rom. 1:1) because it originates in His love;
“Of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:14) because it flows from His sacrifice, and because He is the alone Object of Gospel faith;
Of “the grace of God” (Acts 20:24) because it saves those whom the law curses;
Of “the glory” (1 Tim. 1:11; 2 Cor. 4:4) because it concerns Him who is in the glory, and who is bringing the many sons to glory (Heb. 2:10);
Of ‘our salvation” (Eph. 1:13) because it is the “power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Rom. 1:16);
Of “the uncircumcision” (Gal. 2:7) because it saves wholly apart from forms and ordinances;
Of “peace” (Eph. 6:15) because through Christ it makes peace between the sinner and God, and imparts inward peace.”
